2022 Conference

The Way Up Planning Council is working closely with the Cedar Falls Bien VenU Conference Center to provide measures for a safe environment for The Way Up Conference.   Although the CDC and the state of Iowa no longer have "Covid-19" guidelines or restrictions for hotels or event centers, the Cedar Falls Bien VenU Conference Center and The Way Up Planning Council are cognizant of the continued need for sanitation efforts. The conference center has stated:.

Sanitation and Safety.  The Bien VenU represents that it has established protocols and procedures to limit the spread of disease and assure the safety of all guests in accordance with Centers for Disease Control recommendations and applicable federal, state and local health and safety regulations, including but not limited to the following:  regular training of hotel and conference center staff in safety, sanitation, and social distancing procedures; frequent cleaning of public areas and surfaces; use of high-grade disinfectants and sanitizers in all areas of the hotel and conference center; procedures to ensure the appropriate cleaning of all public areas, meeting rooms and guest sleeping rooms; use of face masks, as appropriate; enforcement of social distancing requirements in public areas, as appropriate; removal and reduction of physical touchpoints; and other appropriate procedures.

Hotel room cancellation policy:   If an individual needs to cancel their hotel reservations they have up until 48 hours prior to arrival to cancel without penalty fees.

We respectfully ask that anyone feeling sick or experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms and anyone diagnosed with or directly exposed to COVID not attend The Way Up Conference event.

Which Way is Up?

 Evidence of profound changes in our lives as leaders, and women, in higher education surrounds us – even bombards us – on a daily basis. As individuals and as communities of educators we are called to create clear pathways for the success of our students and our institutions, but how do we do that when it seems our old maps don’t fit the new and sometimes scary territory in which we find ourselves? We begin the conference by exploring some new and some not-so-new challenges, and taking a fresh look at our opportunities, on the way up.

BIO:

Dr. Elizabeth J. Whitt is a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Merced, where she also served as Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education. She also was an academic administrator focused on undergraduate student success at Saint Louis University and The University of Iowa, and served as a graduate faculty member in higher education and student affairs at The University of Iowa, University of Illinois at Chicago, Iowa State University, and Oklahoma State University.  Professor Whitt’s research and scholarship focus on institutional conditions for student success; cultures in colleges and universities; partnerships between academic affairs and student affairs; and issues and trends in student affairs practice and effectiveness.

Integrity, character, trust, and discipline all play key roles in life's journey as well as who we aspire to be in our career fields.  Shortfalls and challenges come and go, so are we truly becoming our best when we allow others to distract us?  Do we quit when things become stressful or do we continue to press to move the trajectory forward for us and those to come?  Take a journey with me after serving through the enlisted and officer ranks in the military then working hard to becoming my best in the various career fields encountered afterwards.

Bio:

Chiquita Loveless (she/her) is formerly from Chicago, IL.  She holds a BA in Business Administration from Georgia Gwinnett College and a Master's in Business Administration from St. Leo University.  Chiquita serves as Director for Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice at the University of Northern Iowa.  Prior to assuming her current role, she served as Associate Director for Military and Veteran Student Services.  

She served 23 years in the U.S. Navy retiring as a Communication Officer/Chief Warrant Officer 2. Her tours of duty included Commander Naval Special Warfare Command, served on two aircraft carriers and an amphibious assault ship, and numerous overseas deployments to include Operation Iraqi Freedom. She served as the Equal Opportunity Officer and Sexual Assault Victim Advocate for several tours.  Reporting directly to her Commanding Officers. Upon retiring, Chiquita was a former Director for VETCONNEXX, an all-veteran call center located in Atlanta, GA, prior to joining the University of Northern Iowa
staff in 2018.

Chiquita is the recipient of the 2021 Cedar Valley MercyOne Heroes Among Us "Military" award. She is married to Yolando Loveless, a 30-year retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer 4, who currently serves as the Executive Director for Black Hawk County Veterans Affairs.

 Seldom is the path to a leadership role linear or smooth like a newly constructed freeway. Far more often the path is interrupted by challenges and diverges from our original path more like a windy, back road. Dr. Fisher will share lessons learned from her challenges, detours and wrong turns.

BIO:

Dr. Kristie Fisher has served as President of the Iowa Valley Community College District (which includes Marshalltown Community College and Ellsworth Community College) since 2019. Prior to joining Iowa Valley, Kristie spent 5 years in a leadership role at ACT (an international non-profit focused on education and workforce needs) and 15 years in the community college arena including nearly a decade as Vice President, Student Services at Kirkwood Community College. Kristie is a first-generation college student who earned an Associates degree at Kirkwood Community College before completing her Bachelors degree at the University of Iowa. As a working adult, she later earned a MBA (University of Iowa) and PhD (Iowa State University).

Title IX at 50: Its Intention, Its Impact, and What’s Undone

This session will present a history of the landmark legislation, Title IX, which banned sex discrimination in education in the United States and analyze its impact. This legislation had enormous impact on women’s educational attainment, access to financial support, and participation in athletics. In the last ten years, this law’s reach has expanded recently to include sexual assault and harassment and discrimination against pregnant, parenting, and LBGTQ+ students.

 
Ethical, Mindful and Transparent Communication

It seems to happen more frequently these days that well-intended conversations often deteriorate into emotional and destructive exchanges. Within a global and national context of disruption, isolation and increasing examples of intolerance – many of us feel more exhausted and friable than we ever have.  During this workshop we will explore your personal problem-solving approach; we will define ethical communication and we will discuss how to handle difficult conversations with compassion and transparency.

During a time of great censorship, obscurity, and limitation all-inclusive narratives, it is challenging to know our role and responsibility as citizens to uphold the tenets of our nation, that all humanity is created equal with immutable rights to unfettered access to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” And yet, racism is embedded within the very institutions upon which we depend and navigate daily for our very existence and success. Advancing Opportunities for Greater Post-Secondary Attainment through Concurrent Enrollment Programs

Data collected in a recent research study through the Iowa Department of Education illustrates a positive correlation between post- secondary success and attainment for students finishing high school with the completion of college credits compared to those who don’t.  Hear how Iowa Community Colleges and other colleges in Iowa are working collaboratively to help high school students experience college early and in a way where they are carefully balancing career and college exploration along with understanding the rigor and expectation of post-secondary coursework through Iowa’s Senior Year Plus legislation.  The role of the school counselor will be discussed, along with the launch of the College and Career Transition Counselor positions across the state, as well as how concurrent enrollment is leveling the playing field for all students, including first generation college students and those who have previously experienced barriers to post-secondary degrees.  Click here for Presentation.

Members of the University of Northern Iowa faculty partnered with local residents and Habitat for Humanity to conceptualize the meaning of place and wellbeing. Eddie Bowles Historical Walking/Biking Tour
Eddie Bowles (1884-1984) grew up in New Orleans, and he learned to play guitar alongside Louis Armstrong and Kid Ory. A search for work led him up to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he initially was employed to build some of the first paved roads in the city. He remained in Cedar Falls, working a series of manual labor jobs and playing a distinctive 12-bar blues style for friends and neighbors. During the Blues Revival of the 1960s, Bowles was sought out by young guitarists eager to learn his unique picking style of guitar playing, and he continued playing for local audiences well into his nineties before his death in 1984 at the age of 100.  Take this augmented reality tour; click here for details:
